Description

Why Use Nailing Flanges? Nailing fins or flanges, sometimes referred to as mounting flanges, are the strips of metal or plastic installed on the exterior sides of a window to mount it in place on a rough opening. Unlike a front flange which is a decorative piece of trim – a nailing flange is usually set back from the outer edge of the window frame and has fastener holes for screwing or nailing in place. The purpose of nailing fins is to anchor the window to the wall sheathing and hold it in place while the shims and screws are being installed. Fins also work in conjunction with metal and rubber flashing creating the weather resistant barrier to prevent wind and water infiltration.
